Fall Homeschool Plans: Crayons' Grade Three

For some reason it's been harder to nail down what Crayons will be doing than it was for Ponytails--even though I've had much longer to plan her year. Maybe I've just been looking at it for too long.

As things look from here, she'll be doing mostly Ambleside Online's Year 3, with a few book changes because of things she's already done or books that we have or don't have, and because of some subjects that I'd like to combine with Ponytails' work. (So for more details on some of the books, see the post on Grade 7.)

Grade 3 Outline for 2009-2010

Bible and Christian Studies: Theodora Wilson-Wilson's Through the Bible, Mr. Pipes Comes to America, Trial and Triumph, Parables from Nature.

Mathematics: Miquon Math (the last two workbooks), Quarter Mile Math for drills, and whatever other supplements show up through the Review Crew.

Language Arts: Write with the Best Volume 1 is suggested for grade 3 and up, but I am not planning on doing it with Crayons this year, at least until I've gotten more familiar with it myself. She will just be following the "normal" Charlotte Mason language activities such as copywork and narration. I will probably have her try at least some of the Roots and Fruits vocabulary program.

Handwriting: Canadian Handwriting Book C (and copywork).

Spelling: SpellingCity.com (by request).

Literature: We spent all last year on Book 1 of Pilgrim's Progress, and while Ponytails and I went on to Book 2 (Christiana's story) at this age, I think this year Crayons will take a break from it. So I'm planning on using The Real Book of American Tall Tales; Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare; Kingsley's The Heroes (part of it); The Hobbit; The Jungle Books. We may also re-read Alice in Wonderland and include the Apprentice's cherished copy of The Other Alice. I'm hoping Crayons will listen in on some of Ponytails' readalouds as well.

Poetry: William Blake (including A Visit to William Blake's Inn), Sara Teasdale, Hilda Conkling, Longfellow.

History: H.E. Marshall's An Island Story (continuing), Hillyer's A Child's History of the World (continuing), Diane Stanley's Good Queen Bess, Clyde Robert Bulla's Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims. Canadian history: Marshall's Canada's Story, plus some other supplemental reading.

Geography: Still deciding about that.

Science: The Science Book for Girls and Other Intelligent Beings; Science with a Homemade Chemistry Set; science biographies (Galileo and the Magic Numbers); experiment books and lab work with Dad. I just found a whole DK Action Pack: Dinosaur at a yard sale and we may check that out as well--we are a bit short on dinosaur stuff around here.

Natural History: Handbook of Nature Study Outdoor Challenges. We are receiving two issues of Nature Friend Magazine (to review) and may decide to continue the subscription. UPDATE: Forgot to mention a couple of things: The Bee People, by Margaret Warner Morley (a vintage e-text), and What's the Secret Vol. 1, which also covers some bee anatomy.

Health/Anatomy/Cooking: Growing Healthy Homes: Nutrition 101 with Ponytails.

French: The Easy French.

Art: Artistic Pursuits. Diane Stanley's Michelangelo.

Music: Undecided. We'll probably follow AO's composer lineup.

Physical Education and Life Skills: Frank Belgau's Space Walk, and other activities. I'm also planning on having Crayons do activities from the Apprentice's old Pioneer Clubs handbook (some of the Pathfinder-level activities are really fun for this age).
