On CM and workboxing

When does workboxing get in the way of CM? The mama at Little Men in My Library points out some of the pitfalls, and I think she really hit the nail on the head with this. If it's keeping our homeschooled kids busy with OUR version of play (file-folder games, dollar-store craft kits, puzzles, etc.) for longer than they'd normally be at work, and therefore they don't have enough time for their own version of playtime (and work, as she points out in another post, is not necessarily a bad thing, but playtime is also important); if the system doesn't allow enough time to read; or if we find ourselves stretching to create busy work to fill the boxes; then we're in trouble.

Now as one of her commenters pointed out, she might have been able to tweak the system by including cards such as "go out and play for half an hour." However, it sounds like this mama knew her own children best, and realized that they had swapped a system that worked fine for them for one that didn't. (If you read the post, they did keep the boxes--for a slightly different purpose.)

I almost hate to admit that I haven't even tried workboxes. They look fun and interesting, but I hate to give up anything that is already working for us.
