Crafting gift bags that have a second life

By posting the link to this roundup post on Sew Mama Sew, I am not promoting the heard-way-too-much-of-it-this-year position on environmentalism. Earthkeeping is good; indoctrination on Styrofoam cups is not. Enough said on that.

However, sewing cloth bags as present-wrappers (if you can find a good source of fabric) but also making those cloth bags something the recipient can use year-round to carry shopping or shoes in--I mean, Christmas-tree-print Santa sacks can go just so far--does seem quite sensible. The roundup post shows several different types of bags--some with handle holes cut into the sides, some with shaped handles, and so on. It also presents some very attractive ways to use the bags as gift wrap, rather than just saying "here, I put this in a grocery bag for you." The fold-up bag shown at YarnGeek reminds me of a fold-up tote I sewed years ago for my grandmother--she loved it and used it to carry her library books (apples don't fall far from the tree).

(A thought: if you're not into grocery bags at all, or if you use boxes or backpacks to haul your groceries home, an alternative item to sew and use as giftwrap might be pillowcases. I mean, everybody sleeps, right?)
