December Books, Day 22: A Gift from the Lonely Doll

A Gift from the Lonely Doll, by Dare Wright.  1966, Random House.  Reprint info here.  (Photos also from that page.)

This is a longtime Treehouse Christmas favourite.  Yes, I know the Lonely Doll books are a little strange, or, more accurately, they come out of one author's strange life.  But as one Amazon reviewer pointed out, this particular book has no spanking or threatened separations; it's just a happy holiday story.  Interestingly, there is not even one mention of Santa Claus in it--the "secrets and surprises" are all up to the bears (and Edith).

Edith's secret is that she's knitting Mr. Bear a muffler.

And what a muffler.  (The Squirrelings have been teasing Mama Squirrel about that because...okay, you'll see soon enough.)

(That photo found here.)

More photos and an interesting blog post here.

The Lonely Doll was read over and over again in my childhood.
I read the biography a few years back about the author, as much of her upbringing was around Cleveland - my hometown. I found it very, very sad in the end. Alas, I do like all of the books and pink gingham (from The Lonely Doll cover) = makes me feel warm and cozy.
