This Term's Work: Composer Study

Our term's composer (ours, not Ambleside Online's) is Edward Elgar.

Our main resource is this lovely CD that I bought a few years ago:

A good review of the CD is here.

But we are also making use of online resources such as classroom notes and You-tube.  For yesterday's introduction to Elgar, I used online videos of Pomp and Circumstance (including the one with Elgar conducting), which the Squirrelings recognized immediately from the Apprentice's recent high school commencement.  We then read this one-page sort-of biography, which introduces the story of the Enigma Variations and the Nimrod Variation in particular.  Here's a video of that.

We will also be listening to Elgar's Serenade for String Orchestra in E minor.  Here it is on You-tube, accompanied by photos of the composer.

And in browsing through the Elgar available on You-tube, I found a few more interesting things:

Yehudi Menuhin playing, Elgar conducting.  But if you go by the comments, some people prefer the Albert Sammons 1929 recording of the same Violin Concerto:

And for the Yo-Yo Ma fans:

I'm looking forward to this term's music!
