Lydia's Grade Eight: some things to do for school today

1.  Watch Anna Russell (in 1984) describing the plot of Wagner's Ring Cycle operas.  If anyone can handle those often un-lady-like stories and make them seem almost polite, it's Anna Russell. Her audience was obviously having a very good time too. (Some people, I don't know who, might still find some of the content offensive, so don't just hand them over to kids.)  (If you want to get just the gist of her stories--although you'd be missing the music and general mugging--you can read a transcript here.)



2.  Finish the chapter "Temptation" in Ourselves Book II. Charlotte Mason gets very tough on over-dramatized but insincere, misunderstood, or misapplied "repentance" here.  "...fourfold love and gentleness and service the repentant soul brings to God and his brother; but this is because he is glad: out of the joy of his heart there is nothing he cannot do; and, above all, he will away with the proud and sullen tears and regrets of so-called penitence."


3.  Read about the Egyptians and papyrus in The Story of Mankind.


4.  Work some more on deductive reasoning (math book).  If there's a big cube made out of a lot of little cubes, and each side is 12 little cubes across, how many little cubes are in the big cube, how many corner cubes, how many edge cubes, how many other outside cubes, and how many inside cubes that you can't see?

5.  Watch John Mighton's Ted Talk, live at CERN today. (Just Mama Squirrel watched that one.)

Math, how it's going, and Heather's helpful math post

Heather at To Sow a Seed has a good homeschool math post this week.  That might not sound like enough to get you to click over there, but trust me, she has some important things to say both about math and about homeschooling.

Right now Dollygirl is doing a mixture of Saxon Algebra 1/2 (2nd edition), Key to Geometry, and Balance Benders; also Money Matters by Larry Burkett, but that is more consumer education and citizenship than math.

I know how you're supposed to do Saxon.  That's not how we're doing it.  That would be exactly how to make Dollygirl never want to do math again.  The closest comparison I can make is that I'm teaching it much like I did Miquon, minus the Cuisenaire rods.  There are topics that Dollygirl is already very good at; there are new things she needs practice with.  During a math lesson (which doesn't mean One Saxon Lesson), I try to go over something new or to expand on a concept we've been working on (right now it's rate problems and unit multipliers); we might do some sample problems together on that, or do a few other questions on more familiar topics, such as finding the lowest common multiple or changing improper fractions to mixed numbers.  She might do those orally (if they're that sort of question), might do them on scratch paper (the same idea as working at the blackboard).  I watch while she's working those out and offer a little direction if she needs it; we check the Solutions Manual and if everything lines up, we move on; if not, we go back to the point where she got off track.

Then I usually assign either a few word problems, or, depending on what's in the Saxon lesson, a certain number of the shorter-type questions such as "solve for x."  So it might take us a few days to get through one Saxon lesson, or we might stop partway through and move on, or we might do a whole problem set and then skip the next, or we might even go back to a very early lesson for some arithmetic review.

Math archives #5: What's the longest prime number? --with an update

First posted on November 11, 2011.  (11-11-11.  I just thought I'd mention that.)

What would we do without the Internet...

I mentioned recently that a quick check on the current population of Burundi--the subject of a French lesson--showed that there were way more people there than even the (fairly recent) teacher's guide suggested.  That lined up with the fact that we were heading for 7 billion people on Earth by the end of last month.

Today's math history lesson was about the Sieve of Eratosthenes, and the hunt for very large prime numbers.  John Tiner's 2001 book Exploring the World of Mathematics mentioned that the largest discovered to date was over 4 million digits long, which would take about a thousand pages to print out.

On a hunch that that fact too might have been updated, I looked it up.

Yes, the 4-million-digits longest prime was correct in 2001.  

But as of 2008, we are up to a number that is 12,978,189 digits long.

And you thought your ID numbers were hard to learn.


2014 Update from Wikipedia:  As of January 2014, the largest known prime number is 257,885,161 − 1, a number with 17,425,170 digits.  (Sourced from this article.)

How I became a math teacher?

The question mark in the subject line is deliberate.  I am a very un-mathy person.  I like Scrabble, cryptograms, word-based logic problems, crosswords; I shy away from number puzzles.  Not that I can't do math or handle numbers, at least in the everyday world; it's just that if I were sign up for a course in something that interested me, it probably wouldn't be math.  My idea of probably the dullest job in the world is accounting.

But teaching math--that does interest me.  Ever since I started looking at math curricula and homeschooling The Apprentice (and the later Squirrelings), close to two decades ago, I've been fascinated by the history of how math has been taught, especially over the last century, especially at the elementary levels.  I was there for a lot of it, good, bad, and ugly. What might be abstractions for some are clear memories for me.  I liked this, I learned from that; or not.  This teacher knew how to get math ideas across; that one made us fall asleep.

And I like teaching elementary math (and basic algebra and geometry) at home, seeing the girls learn new ideas and gain confidence in their numeracy. Even when they struggle or complain that math is hard or boring...that's a challenge.  I like being able to work at our own pace, and to use whatever's handy for illustrations.  I like feeling free to just say "here's the rule, here's how you do it" when that makes more sense than endless demonstrations and discovery learning.

I liked using our stash of rods and hundred charts and games and software.  I liked helping people who didn't get Miquon Math.  (I still think it's a brilliant primary curriculum.)  I liked reading about people like John Holt and John Mighton who believed that all children could learn math if it was carefully taught.

So does that make me a math teacher?  Well, I do teach math, and as I said, I have been teaching math to at least one child each year, sometimes two, for almost twenty years.  (Sometimes Mr. Fixit has been the math teacher too.) While I'm not a mathematician, did not major in math, do not even have math credits beyond Grade 13 (and I struggled for that one), I seem to have steered the Squirrelings towards acceptable levels of numeracy.  Other homeschooling parents, many without specialization in math, have done the same.

How?  I can't speak for all the other families out there.  For some it might be nothing more than buying a solid textbook or workbook series and doing whatever comes next.  For myself, I just decided that the process of teaching elementary math was not that much more mysterious than the teaching of any other subject.  If I could teach reading, writing, history, there was no particular reason I couldn't also handle elementary arithmetic and middle-school math topics. And since I was very aware of the booby traps and swamps in my own math adventures, I was determined to avoid as many of them as possible, including the infamous Fifth Grade Slough of Despond (girls often fall into it around the time they meet up with Giant Long Division).  If public school gave me only a mediocre appreciation of math, I could do at least somewhat better with my own girls.

Now here's the big point.

In Ontario, scores on standardized math tests are dropping.  Why? Some blame the teachers.  Some blame the curriculum.  Some blame society.  Or the weather.

One proposed solution is to have elementary math taught only by math specialists.  Because even the classroom teachers don't seem to be able to teach math well using the new approaches.  Does that imply that there's a) something wrong with the students, b) something wrong with the teachers, or c) something wrong with the curriculum? Votes?

It reminds me of a situation where an office bought a huge, expensive, complicated copier that required advanced training just to make ordinary copies.  Yes, if you were properly trained on it, you could use it to copy, sort and bind entire encyclopedias, but most of the usual copying chores were much more mundane.  It would have made more sense to buy a simpler machine, and send the occasional complicated jobs to a print shop.  It didn't make sense to blame the office staff, either, just because they didn't want to be full-time slaves of the Copying Beast.  And it wouldn't have made sense to put blame on the clients--because, in the end, they didn't care how big or expensive the copier was--they just wanted their letters and documents.

And what we really need is for schools to teach math (and other subjects), in a way that the teachers can handle, in a way that delivers what the children require, in ways that help them to grow and learn and include numbers and measurement and shapes and mathematical relationships in their lives.  Because they aren't impressed by how big the machine is, either, if it's not working for them.

For them, all you administrators out there. Take it from this question-marked math teacher.

Math Archives #1: Can they do enough math to know they're being cheated?

First posted April 2012; but this is a post-within-a-post, and part of it is from 2007.

I had planned to repost this 2007 post today (both the part about our own homeschool and the comparison with the third grade math class at the end of the post), and then someone sent me a link to a recent Macleans' Magazine article on the sorry situation in Canadian math teaching.  It reminded me even more of the educational Blerwm (see the old post) that continues to spew, particularly in the elementary schools.  If this situation doesn't make you furious for our children--that is, the children of this generation, even if we homeschoolers have taught our own offspring better--I don't know what would. And it's not just that they grow up cheated on math:  the same applies to standards in reading, writing, and other skills that, until recently, were considered within the normal scope of a child's education.

And what makes me even angrier for these children is that we non-experts, the home-teaching parents who may or may not have college-level math courses or education credentials (many homeschoolers do have advanced degrees), seem to be doing better than the current average at math education, almost without trying.  Some of it's the curriculum homeschoolers use--certain popular programs are known to be a level or two over traditional North American math goals, so kids using them would seem a bit ahead anyway. But even if we take math slow and simple, we have this crazy advantage over the current hands-tied school situation: most of us parents, especially those of us over a certain age, were taught with traditional math methods, and that's what we pass on to our kids.  Here's how you multiply fractions, here's how you divide them.  None of this messing with paper strips.  

It doesn't matter why we do it, though, so much as whether or not it works.  Can our kids add, subtract, multiply, divide?  Can they make change?  Can they figure out a percentage?  Do they just have a good sense of how numbers work?  Apparently the kids taught with the any-way-that-works-for-you method can't, and don't. When they get to high school, where math is still taught using more traditional methods, a lot of them flounder.

Are you laughing in disbelief at this point?  I'm more ready to spit.  Crayons has been suggesting that she might like to go to public school for grade six, just to try it out like Ponytails did.  Sorry: with this amount of un-teaching going on in Canadian schools, that would be my last choice for her for next year.  

Here's the relevant part from our 2007 post:

But on the other hand, there was an article today in the local paper about math teaching in public schools, that tipped things back towards thinking again that we must be doing all right.
"Recently [the grade 3 teacher] taught the children to count by fives, using Popsicle sticks. She had them sit in a circle and line up four Popsicle sticks in a row, with a coloured one laid diagonally across each pile.

"Then she asked how many Popsicle sticks there were. One student crawled into the middle of the circle and counted up the piles: "Five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 45 . . ." he said and paused at the final two sticks. "Forty-seven" he called.

"The class applauded him. 'Good job!' she praised, and then sent the children to sit down with worksheets where they again had to add the "bundles" of lines arranged five to a pile.

"Instead of having the children write down the correct totals, though, she had them choose the right answer from some numbers printed on the bottom of the sheet. They were to cut out the right number and glue it in the proper spot.

"The children were enjoying cutting and feeling the texture of the glue stick under their fingernails.

"'Children at this age are very visual and very kinesthetic,' she said. They learn by seeing and often need to move around while learning, even if it's just working with glue."
OK, I know it's still September, and maybe that was a review lesson--but cutting and pasting answers in grade 3? And Crayons (grade 1) has been doing that same kind of counting-by-fives-plus-whatever's-left. Without crawling on the floor, I might add. Or needing to get glue stick under her fingernails.

The Parents' Review on Geometry and Synthesis (and the argument over taking flowers apart)

"Before the child has to work at geometry, see that he realizes:-- That there are in nature no lines, except the edges of solids, nor surfaces, except the sides of solids. That natural movements and growths take place usually in curves, not straight lines. That axes, diameters and co-ordinates are not part of any natural figure, but measuring rods introduced for man's convenience. Connect in the pupil's mind these devices with that earlier invention, mentioned in the former paper, of breaking big numbers into tens and hundreds; explain that man extracts no more real instruction out of such devices than a monkey gets by breaking things in bits, unless he completes the cycle of study by the transcendental (or supra-simian) act of synthesis. The parent will translate these words into such as she finds suit the child; the essential thing is for the parent herself to grasp the idea clearly. If she does not, she should get herself taught to do so by some competent person.

 "In connection with this idea of synthesis, a child should be taught that if he wants to learn anything about an object by breaking it open, he should not break it till he has taken a good look at it in its original state, so as to be able to reconstruct it in his mind as a whole.'  ~~ "Home Algebra and Geometry," by Mary Everest Boole, in The Parents' Review, Volume 3, 1892/93, pgs. 854-857

And check this one out (emphases mine):

 "May I make an example of flowers to illustrate the application of the science of appearances? Amongst other sciences applicable to them is horticulture, which treats of their civilization, the robustness of their constitution, their span of life, their propagation, their cultivation, the improvement of their characteristics of form and colour, the soil suitable to them, its texture, and its chemical constituents. There is also botany, a science which deals with their habits, their structure, their organs, their classification and variety. These are all concrete facts, to acquire which we examine the flowers from every point of view. We uproot them, we dissect them, we remove them from their surroundings, and consider them almost without reference to them. The facts of their appearance are different. They depend, not only upon the aspect and condition of the flowers themselves, the relation of the parts to the whole, and of the parts to each other, in different qualities and characteristics, but their aspect also depends upon their relation to surroundings, and to the aspect and condition of surroundings, and to relations, conditions, influences outside themselves and their immediate surroundings.

 "We may be able to change their surroundings and the outside influences, but we cannot disassociate them, We may take flowers from the field, or hedgerow, or garden, and bring them indoors, place them in a vase or upon a table or in a box, we may change their conditions in a countless number of different ways, but do what we may, we cannot see them without some surroundings. Any change of surroundings or change of relation of outside influences will cause change of appearance. Their appearance amongst the green grasses in the field will be different from their appearance as they grow in the garden soil against the red-brick wall, or as they lie indoors upon a polished mahogany table. They will appear different under the influence of sunshine, or gray weather or rain, at a distance from us or near at our feet. The appearance of the flowers will in every possible case have certain fixed relations to surroundings and outside conditions and influences. Dollygirl's Wednesday School Plans

Opening time:  choice of hymn, work on memory work (from Romans 8).

The Grammar of Poetry, done together.  A lesson on similes.

Key to Percents, Book 3.  First activity:  play "Guess My Decimal" with a celebrity panel of dolls and stuffies.  Each one has an index card with one of the eight multiplication-of-decimals problems on page 13. Your job:  to solve all the problems before the time runs out.  Cash and large expensive prizes will probably not be involved.

Second activity:  Work through page 14.  Do not solve the problems; just rewrite them as instructed.

Homework activity:  Solve the problems on page 15.

English History:  Two short chapters in Arnold-Forster's History of England.  Homework:  read two pictorial books, Fishbourne: A Day in a Roman Palace, and Roman Britain by Felicity Hebditch.  Come to class tomorrow with a list of ten Stump-the-Teacher questions and answers.

Handicrafts: Start working on a mini cross-stitch project.

Plutarch's Lives:  Coriolanus, Lesson 2.  (We will be reading the corresponding scene from Shakespeare's play later in the week.)

Easy Grammar Plus:  one page in the workbook.

Christian Studies:  read the next chapter in the Acts of the Apostles, and narrate.

Countdown to School: Interview with The Apprentice

What are you studying at university?

I am in a research-based science program, with a specialization in math. This will effectively give me a double degree in science and math. This program has a strong focus on conducting research, reading and analyzing papers, presentation and scientific writing, and pedagogy (teaching).

Do you think of yourself as a "math person?"  Do you see the world mathematically?

I don't actually see myself as that much of a math person. Although I was one of the stronger math students at my high school, I've met an awful lot of people at university who are more talented in math than I am. Not that I don't have good math skills, but when you talk to these people about a problem, or see their proofs, you realize that it's more than just algorithms, it's more like learning a language. You can memorize vocabulary lists and learn grammar, but constructing speech itself is more of an art. I know how to order a beer in French, but I certainly can't write poetry.

What got you interested in pursuing post-secondary mathematics?
My short answer is that I wanted to do physics but I'm better at math, so I decided to go at it from the maths side. The first two years of my program, regardless of your specialization, have mandatory full-year math courses. The program tried hard to show how this math could be applied to other branches of science, but to many of my classmates it didn't even feel like part of science, just an annoying course to get through. As I've taken more and more math courses, I've found them linking together and applying to other disciplines. I've always found math useful and relevant. I feel like my degree is really just in research science, but when I was able to pick a focus I wanted to have a tool that would be useful in any of my scientific aspirations.
Would you like to be a math teacher?  Why or why not?
I would absolutely love to be a math teacher. I spent a lot of time in high school acting as a math tutor at the school's math help centre, and I also peer tutored a math class. After physics lessons I often found myself surrounded by students wanting me to run over the problems (I loved doing that but it meant I never got my own homework done...). At this point I feel like I may end up in something similar to teaching or perhaps administration. Ontario teaching jobs are very hard to come by no matter how good you are. While I'd prefer to teach on the undergraduate level anyway, this generally requires a PhD. I'm not sure at this point that I would want to pursue that much school. However, I am keeping learning and pedagogy in my sights, this year I am taking a child development course and hope to focus an individual project on the effectiveness of various mathematics teaching methods.
What were some of your early math experiences?  Do you think they were important to your later interest in math?
The earliest math experience I can remember is learning addition and subtraction on a homemade scale constructed from string and yogurt cups. ("This piece weighs five. The piece on the other side weighs two. What do we need to add to make them balance?") Later achievements involved hopping back and forth on a number line, and learning fractions through cooking. I think these experiences were really important, especially watching my parents use things like fractions in everyday life. Learning things like the fact that you can fill the half-teaspoon measure halfway full to get a quarter-teaspoon without dirtying two spoons (or with my dad, if you pour out half a bottle of engine oil, that's 500 mL) have always reminded me how useful math is in real life. Learning that numbers and electricity could be connected in small electronics led to an interest in physics.

Was there a time you did not feel "good at math," or that you disliked it?
There are always times that I don't feel good at math. The problem is that until you get really really specialized, everything has to stay connected. It may not always be clear that eventually two concepts will merge together, so if something seems kind of pointless at the time and you just learn the bare minimum, it can come back to haunt you. I'm sure I disliked it at various times in elementary school. What I've found in tutoring others is if they're really not getting it, you need to take a step back and try a completely different direction or explanation. A lot of students I found just needed a reason for what they were doing to understand (e.g. trig gives you ratios between angles and sides of a triangle, so if you don't know one of them, you can find it). This really frustrated me at one point when I was tutoring students in the "lower" academic stream. Those students might have been there because English wasn't their first language, because they had a learning disability, or sometimes even because they just didn't like school. But none of them were stupid. I had a supervising teacher actually stop me mid-explanation and tell me that I couldn't give a student the logic behind a concept, I should just teach them the algorithm for doing it, because they weren't capable of understanding. No wonder they didn't think they were good at math.

What parts (types) of mathematics do you enjoy studying most, and which ones not so much?
I really like working with mathematical computer programs and understanding how they work. I did a research project on this last year looking at molecular electronics using several programs. Really the part of math I don't like is certain testable things that you only have to know for a course, but later you would just look up or use the computer to solve. I understand that you need to know the process, and I'm interested in knowing the process, but I tend to make computational errors by hand which can slow me down or give the wrong result.

If you were teaching your twelve-year-old self, what would you do do make math a good subject?
If I was teaching my younger self, I'd have lots of practice and worksheets because practice makes things much easier. But I'd also have experiments where you can collect real numerical data and apply the concepts to that, so you can see how they're used and they become relevant.

Any other thoughts?

One of the best math resources I've come across is Khan Academy.  I'd highly recommend it for high school level math (it has other grades too including some university). The conceptual teaching is excellent and there are lots of practice questions too. You can earn points for watching the videos and doing questions, which I loved when I was a kid and still enjoy.  (We didn't use Khan Academy; I just liked playing games and getting points.)

Countdown to School: Middle School Math, Part Three (or, "Trust my navigation"*)

I used that word "attempt" advisedly, because I do not have enough knowledge of what's out there to separate the "CM-friendly" curricula from the rest.  Yes, we've tried a few math books and resources over the years, and there are a few middle-school possibilities in the cupboard; but I can't give an opinion, say, on the Life of Fred series, or Math-U-See, because I've never used them.  So this post is just about what's on Dollygirl's "math map" for this year.

The Deputy Headmistress posted a story recently about a family trip where the GPS was giving them trouble; it would announce that it was time to "turn right" without warning, and the driver had to make a lot of sudden sharp turns.  I feel like my math GPS has been doing the same thing recently!  Sometimes those turns turn out to be a good thing, even if you could have used a bit more preparation.

PLAN A:  With the thought that we should both keep the math curriculum "simple" and "straightforward" this year, as well as getting Dollygirl accustomed to using a math textbook and working more independently, I planned that we would start the year by finishing the Key to Percents workbook series she had been using last spring, and then move into our somewhat-vintage copy of Saxon Algebra 1/2 (a conglomeration of arithmetic review, pre-algebra, and a bit of geometry and business math).  Based on previous experience, I didn't expect that Dollygirl would be getting through a lesson every day, but I thought that two lessons a week would be about right, and that would also give us an extra day to write Saxon tests (every few lessons) and also work on old grade 7 Gauss contests.  It's really not a bad plan.

A MONKEY WRENCH IN THE WORKS:  The trouble I'm having with Saxon, without even having started the year yet, is not so much those legendary long practice sets.  I think Dollygirl could actually benefit from the consistent review in those.  It's two other things:  the way the lessons are explained (awful), and the sequence in which things are introduced (all over the place).  I tend to side with Charlotte Mason in thinking that, although arithmetic skills like fractions come into play in algebra, you do need to understand that algebra is a separate kind of math, a "game" with its own rules; and that geometry is also a separate topic, although you can use both algebra and arithmetic to solve geometry questions, and when you do high school algebra you need to know coordinate geometry. Yes, the topics intertwine, but making a mishmash out of them too soon may not be the best approach for those of us who need to keep that math road map in front of us.  Those who drive by instinct may have time for sightseeing, but the rest of us need to keep the routes straight.

PLAN A and a Half:  The World Book Typical Course of Study seemed to cut things down to a reasonable amount in the language arts area; I decided to check out the 7th Grade Math.  Again, crazily enough, I think World Book provides a pretty good list of skills for this year!  The really crazy part is that those are the topics covered in the Saxon book too.  Only Mr. Saxon does them in an order that makes sense only if you already know what makes sense.  The Bible verse "Parents (math teachers), do not exasperate your children (students)" comes to mind.

PLAN B:  I have decided to give Plan B a chance, and if it doesn't work out, or we've had enough of it after a short time, we'll go back to Plan A.  Plan B is to proceed with Key to Percents through September, as planned; and then to work through three short, friendly math books that I downloaded to the e-book reader when they were offered as freebies.  The three books seem to complement each other and don't have too much overlap (otherwise I would use only one or two of them).  If they go too fast on any of the important topics, we'll slow down and use other resources (books or online sites) to do some extra exploring.

The books are:
Discovering Mathematical Thought: Growing the Math Side of the Brain, by Hal Torrance.  The value of observation, and the creative side of problem solving.  Topics include probability, proportion, estimation. 
Beat Algebra Before It Beats You, by Hal Torrance.  This is not a book about doing algebra; it's a review of topics such as composite numbers and multiples, fractions, percentage, exponents, etc., that you need to have solid before starting algebra.
College Math Concepts for Middle School Students:  A Stress-Free Approach to Broad Math Understanding, by Hal Torrance.  Another run through number patterns, basic arithmetic review, integers, and estimation (he loves estimation).  There are also lessons towards the end on mean, median and mode, simple probability, and geometric reasoning; we might leave those for later in the year.

And by that time, I think Dollygirl will be ready to tackle the first chapter of Skill in Algebra on TheMathPage.com.  There's also a chapter of "younger" algebra activities in the book How Math Works.  If the Torrance books, or the extra work we need to do to get through them, require the full year, then algebra can wait till Grade Eight.
Will we get to any real geometry this year?  Or have time to do much with measurement?  How many mountains (or highways) can we climb up (or drive down) in one school year?  The answer is: I don't know.  It's a new journey; I can plan the trip, but I can't give you the report until we're actually on the way.

Countdown to School: Middle School Math, Part Two (or, Getting there is half the fun; come share it with me.*)

First, a bit of Charlotte Mason catechism.

Why was Charlotte Mason disappointed in the results of her early teaching experiences?

"The children, no doubt, 'got on'––a little; but each one of them had the makings in her of a noble character, of a fine mind, and where was the lever to lift each of these little worlds?"

Why didn't Charlotte Mason think much of just plugging away at long arithmetic problems (among other things)?

"If education is to secure the step-by-step progress of the individual and the race, it must mean something over and above the daily plodding at small tasks which goes by the name."

What should be done during lessons?

"This is the sort of thing that the children should go through, more or less, in every lesson––a tracing of effect from cause, or of cause from effect; a comparing of things to find out wherein they are alike, and wherein they differ; a conclusion as to causes or consequences from certain premises."

How is teaching math like French?

"Supposing, for instance, that by good teaching you secure the child's attention to the verb avoir, he will remember it; that is to say, some infinitely slight growth of brain tissue will record and retain that one French verb. But one verb is nothing; you want the child to learn French, and for this you must not only fix his attention upon each new lesson, but each must be so linked into the last that it is impossible for him to recall one without the other following in its train. The physical effect of such a method appears to be that each new growth of the brain tissue is, so to speak, laid upon the last; that is, to put it figuratively, a certain tract of the brain may be conceived of as being overlaid with French."

What was that again?

"Every Lesson must recall the Last.––Let every lesson gain the child's entire attention, and let each new lesson be so interlaced with the last that the one must recall the other; that again, recalls the one before it, and so on to the beginning."

Second, those who want to teach Charlotte Mason-style math should read "You don't need a composition program," a post at Higher Up and Further In.  The subject is different, the principles are much the same.  Not expecting more than is reasonable for a child's age, either in attention span or final output (hour-long grade one math, anyone?).  Trusting the process through many weeks or months or years of faithful narration, copywork, and dictation from worthy books, and without undue interference (also known as classroom clutter or busywork).

Now ineffective and even harmful curriculums do exist in math, as well as in English and other subjects. We've run into a couple of them ourselves.  The Deputy Headmistress recently mentioned a book that her teenager asked her to read aloud because she was having difficulty, but even reading it aloud could not make a good book out of a poor one, and they agreed to drop it.  There is an important, but obviously difficult, distinction between needing to persevere with something, even when it's difficult or doesn't seem immediately rewarding, and deciding to modify it or even let it go.

And the testimonies of those who have "taught math Charlotte Mason-style," especially in the upper years when we all seem to turn to the same few textbook publishers, are fewer and farther between than those whose children have become excellent readers and writers.  That is a fact.  However, lack of recognition doesn't mean it doesn't exist.  What of the way of the will and the way of the reason; the three instruments of education (environment, habit, living ideas)?  What of students' ability to visualize, as they do in their spelling, their picture study, their narrations?  What about simply having more doors opened?  What about "not how much does he know, but how much does he care?"

Finally, in a world that is already too utilitarian, too unpoetical, too competitive, analytical and computer-driven, why and how should a "human curriculum" promote mathematics?  And what kind of mathematics?  Where do our middle-schoolers, somewhere in the transition between elementary mathematics and senior-high algebra and geometry, fit into that vision?

Countdown to School: Movin' Right Along with Middle School Math

It's four weeks till school starts.

I've been thinking about math, teaching math, blogging about math, e-grouping about math, for...well, over fifteen years, anyway.  I taught the Apprentice math through the ninth grade level.  I wasn't as involved in Ponytails' middle school math--Mr. Fixit was in charge of that.  But now I'm back at that point with Dollygirl, and I still wonder if we've gotten it "right."

Oh, it's not that I can't teach integers and scalene triangles.  It's not the mathematics, at this level, that's the issue.  It's getting the perspective on it right.  Charlotte Mason talked about learning as allowing students to see a vista spread before them, a beautiful landscape; letting them travel through "pleasant paths."  Some traditional math methods have been more like dropping the learner partway up a mountain, where all he can see is the rock right in front of him, and expecting him to enjoy the climb...to where, he hasn't been told. Some math experiences could also be compared to driving with someone who's blocking the windshield with a roadmap.

Which makes me think of Kermit and Fozzie's road trip in The Muppet Movie.  ("Turn left at the fork in the road.")

Hooks to Hang Things On: Charlotte Mason for All Time

When people criticize CM homeschoolers for using "old books," I don't think it's generally Shakespeare, Plutarch, Emily Dickinson that they have in mind, although you never know; more often they're thinking of late-Victorian science textbooks, Spencerian handwriting, and anything Empire-ish.   It is true that Charlotte Mason's school "kingdom" promoted a particular set of values.  She said that, in fact, an education should reflect the chief ideas of its age, if anyone could nail those down.  Regular Treehouse visitors will know that I'm a longtime reader of Charlotte Mason's books, and an experimenter with her curriculum.  (Yeah, my poor kids.) So you might think I'm one of the few stubborn types who insist on every school book being a hundred years old.  You might be wrong.

I think Charlotte's booklists and curriculum reflect, to a large extent, her own world and her own times.   She drew a great deal of her philosophy from the classical tradition, but she (and her colleagues) combined that with an early-20th-century, British, largely Church of England view of what made a well-educated person and a well-rounded citizen.

And I will rush to add that I admire her for it   Some of the ways that she mined her own culture, followed discoveries and world events, and used the resources that came her way to apply her principles of education, were hugely creative.

In another period, another place, she might have chosen differently, again, not so much in literature or with enduring writers such as Bacon, but with the more informational subjects.  Our problem today is that many non-fiction books for children aren't well written; they may have facts and lots of visuals, but they lag on writing style (or are deliberately offensive or just silly--a current version of "twaddle"). However, let's leave the style question aside for now.  What I want to look at is the way Charlotte's book choices combined ideas-of-the-age with straight information, and often a touch of practicality as well. THIS is what we need to copy in current application of CM principles: the well-written book, for sure, but also the literary umbrella.  This is not the same as making connections for children or squeezing out Herbartian apperception masses.  It's about finding a way to both organize a certain amount of information, and make it interesting at the same time.  To make it timely, but not limited to people from one's own time.  To make it relevant to the home country or region, but without assuming that children will not be interested in plants or animals they can't see firsthand.  To provide beautiful "mental furniture," but also the skills to serve others and become generally useful (knowing how to find one's way between towns, mail packages, mend clothes, spell things properly).  This is no small job!

One of the first examples I noticed was in the Arithmetic chapter of Home Education.  "How many pennies is a shilling worth? How many shillings, then, might he have for his fifty pennies? He divides them into heaps of twelve, and finds that he has four such heaps, and two pennies over; that is to say, fifty pence are (or are worth) four shillings and two pence."  In a country where the common coin, a shilling, was worth twelve pence, the children were taught early on to divide things by twelve (with pennies as remainders), before they even worked with tens.  As North American currency is based on the decimal, we use pennies, dimes and dollars to teach units, tens, and hundreds (and later, money applications make decimals themselves easier); the twelves get relegated to inches, dozens of eggs, or maybe hours on a clock.  The order in which we teach arithmetic concepts will vary according to our money or other natural illustrations; the principles of teaching them do not.

Frances Epps' guide to the British Museum (actually a review of ancient history and mythology) was written specially for the Parents' Union School students; but the very similar guides to Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's and so on, that were used right from the start of the P.U.S., were not; they were just picked up as books that would give context to heroes and history, and do it in a way that interested children.  The fact that Charlotte Mason depended on the same sorts of books for over thirty years says to me that, first, they must have worked; and, second, that they illustrated her principle of putting facts into a meaningful context.  Besides, all this has a bit of a practical bent too; if a child has worked that much with pence and shillings (or pennies and dimes, or euros), he'll know how to count money and make change; if he's read the stories of the Elgin Rooms or the memorials at a cathedral, or what's in the Smithsonian (is there a good book about that?), maybe he'll be able to take you on a tour someday.

Look at the middle-school-level work in geography.  In any term, students of about twelve or thirteen might be using one of the country-by-country books that Charlotte Mason herself had written years before, reading the lessons and filling in maps; studying concepts in physical geography; and discussing current events and finding those places on maps.  They would also be studying a book of famous naval battles of the British Empire, with the intention, besides encouraging patriotism, of giving them a larger, global view of geography.  In the post-WWI period, the old geography books were not dropped (though they were over thirty years old and had not been revised), but a book outlining boundary changes in Europe was included in the programme every term, and students were drilled on the map of the world.  It's the Sea Power book, though, that shows the use of a resource that put "the world" into a context, a frame that made sense to the children of that place.  A utilitarian model of teaching might present the same information, but in a more technical way, without that "hook to hang information on."  Which way is more likely to stir the imagination and encourage learning?  Also, the more global perspective of Mr. Household's book (actually two different books, used in different years) balanced the close-up country studies that they were getting through Charlotte Mason's own geographies.

Now, some homeschoolers may not approve of "studying war" as an aid to geography (although it's something to consider--don't Americans learn some national geography by studying battles of the War of Independence and the Civil War?).  Most of us are not looking for a revival of the British Empire.  But to make use of context, or hooks, in the way that Charlotte Mason did, we need to be looking for present-day equivalents.  For some of us, a global geography context might be Christian missions.  Our family owns an "animal atlas," which divides animal life by continents; some students might use geology, or archaeology, or marine biology, or the voyages of a particular person or group.  I am NOT suggesting that we squeeze any of these topics into a "Robinson Crusoe Scheme," turn them into reproducible unit studies or any such thing, or even that we ruin an innocent novel by turning it into a geography lesson.  It might still be a book that was not written to teach that subject--and that's probably all the better.  But please note also that this is not the same as sneaking beets into brownies:  the students should know what they're studying and why.  In that sense, it probably is better to identify a separate resource (in their case, Sea Power) as the vehicle for geography, and keep it for that.

I mentioned the Smithsonian, as one example of an "umbrella" that houses a great deal of American history and culture.  What spots, monuments, castles, are the treasure houses of the places where you live?  Or where you'd like to go?  What ways can you think of to not only zoom in, but zoom out?  What resources, old or new, exist to teach about these places, and about the world and the universe at large?  On a non-geography level, what applications-with-bigger-ideas are out there for lessons in mathematics or language, in music or art?

If we're looking for the best-of-the-best materials currently available to homeschoolers (which might not be written for homeschoolers or for schools at all), these are the criteria we need to keep in mind.  How will we stir the imaginations of this generation and maybe the one to come?   Charlotte Mason did a fantastic job speaking from and to her world; and in many ways, she still speaks to ours.  If we can't use all her books, we can at least draw on her wisdom.

The why and how of frugal homeschooling, Part Two

Part One is here.

One part of frugal homeschooling is making better use of the books and other materials that you have.

Another part is to take resources--or things that you've never thought could be resources--and use them in ways that they weren't originally intended.  Like this summer when our cutlery box became my jewelery box.  Or the bits and pieces of the Aunt Sarah Scrap Challenge.  Or a Chinese-style sauce made with ketchup.

How does that work for school?

We've had a thrifted copy of Kids' Magnetic Poetry Book and Creativity Kit (Workman Publishing) for years.  Originally I had great ideas for incorporating the included poetry suggestions into our language arts time, but that never really happened.   We did use the magnetic words that came with the book, but mostly on the refrigerator rather than on the shiny blue fold-out panel inside the cover.

This week I was looking for a white board to use for some math review with Dollygirl.  I found a small magnetic board stuck to the washing machine, but I wanted a bigger one.  I thought there was a larger one somewhere in the school cupboard.  When I went to look for it, I saw the Magnetic Poetry Book, and thought of the shiny blue fold-out panel.  It worked!   What a great resource for math, or for other wipe-off work like spelling words!  As a bonus, it's already marked into centimeter-sized squares:  good for graphing, or geometry, or Cuisenaire rods.

We've used many resources for French lessons that weren't intended as curriculum--but they happened to be in French, like magazines bought from the library's discard rack.  We've also used real stuff from around the house:  toys, fruit, and so on...and not just for French, but for math and other subjects.

Magazines in general can be a great learning tool.  A few years ago we subscribed to Canadian Geographic, and that became the core of our high school Canadian geography course.  What could be more current and more relevant?--plus the magazine has a website with expanded articles, maps, and other resources.  Also we had a two-subscriptions-for-one coupon that we shared with another family, which made it even more frugal for all of us.

Recently I came across one of Emilie Barnes' Twelve Teas books.  This would make a great resource for young ladies (even very young ladies)--there are recipes, crafts (such as invitations), suggestions of ways to acquire basic "tea party equipment," thoughts about keeping friendships strong, and illustrations that, while slightly overdosing on lace tablecloths, show ways to make your house homier.  It wasn't written as a "home ec" book, but you could do worse than spend a season trying out some of the ideas.

Citizenship: Plutarch's Life of Pericles

Composition:  see Tuesday.

French:  we haven't done any French yet this week, so we need to make sure we include this.

Handicrafts:  continue doll-making project.

Story of Canada (Lunn & Moore), start chapter 10, "The Flying Years."  After World War II, "more prosperous times had come."  What were some changes in Canadian life at that time?  Who was Tommy Douglas?  (maybe somebody to add to your People notebook).  What happened at midnight on March 31, 1949?

Dollygirl's Grade Six: Plans for Monday

The Story of the World Volume 4, chp 31b, "The Marshall Plan."  We have not yet done the earlier chapters about Israel, India, and Egypt, but this chapter leads directly out of what we have been reading about World War II, and also relates to Brother Andrew's Iron Curtain travels in God's Smuggler.  Some interesting (British) activities here.  Also BBC History: A Wartime Home.  Also here.

Dollygirl's Grade Six: homeschool things we're doing

Things we've done already this week:

Basic Bible Studies:  completed study 2, about God's sovereignty

Hymns

Mensa puzzle cards

French:  continuing Monsieur Perrichon, we're up to the introduction of The Commandant (another traveller along with the Perrichon family and two possible suitors for their daughter), but we still haven't gotten everyone on the train yet.

Math:  measured another tree outside and played with cubes

Nature study:  brought a big garden spider inside (in a magnifying jar) to get a closer look. (And let it go again.)

Monday night swim class

Citizenship:  read Uncle Eric chapters 2 and 3, about the importance of having good models in place before you load up with facts, and of having a high standard of proof for things that matter a lot to you.  (Don't just take my word for it...)

Poetry:  read two chapters of the Robert Frost biography, and listened to him read "Birches."

The Hobbit:  rescued Bilbo and the dwarves from the Wargs and gotten them up into an eagle's nest.

Science:  we finished a chapter from The Great Motion Mission, and got a spoon out to prove that when you look at yourself in a convex surface, you turn upside down.

Canadian history:  read a bit about life in the 1920's, about bush pilots and Emily Murphy (women are persons).

World history:  read about the Long March in China.

Cymbeline:  Iachimo's first meeting with Imogen.

God's Smuggler:  Brother Andrew's early days as a Christian and his "missionary post" in a chocolate factory.  (For anyone reading this with a Year Six, I recommend some parental editing for this chapter.)

In the midst of:

reading chapter two of the Einstein biography and doing a written narration

The Aeneid of Virgil:  still need to finish the chapter we're on.

Dollygirl's Grade Six Homeschool week: already changed

This week we will have only four days of school, because of a public-school holiday on Friday.  I also forgot that Dollygirl is going on a tour of the local airport on Thursday morning.  Also I think a couple of the days were a bit overloaded, so we'll probably have to pick and choose a couple of the readings.  Here's where things are at now.

Monday

Opening time: Bible verses, hymn, prayer, Mensa puzzle cards

Bible—Schaeffer, Basic Bible Studies. Finish verses on page 13, about the Holy Spirit.

Poetry: Robert Frost, America’s Poet, chapter 4, “Searching.” Read “Birches.”

The Hobbit, chapter 5

Math: Minds on Math pages 44-45. First, construct a clinometer using a photocopied protractor, straw, string, and washer. Go outside and use the clinometer to measure a tree (see instructions in the book). Come back inside and construct a scale drawing to determine the height of the tree. Answer questions 1-3 on page 46.

French: review the two songs we did last week. Le Voyage de Monsieur Perrichon, Act 1, Scene 6.

World history: Story of the World Vol. 4, chapter 25, first half. Explain about Manchukuo. How was this an early test case for the League of Nations? (See also Usborne Illustrated Atlas of World History, page 69.)

Bible—verses on page 14 (end of study 1). How do we recognize the Christian God? Reminder: “the Bible sets forth God as one God but in three persons.”

Geography: Read pages 13-15 in Hammond Discovering Maps, and narrate. Read Cool Geography, pages 10-14. (Keywords: gazetteer, atlas, marine chart.) Do Cool Geography Activity 3 on page 20: map questions about the United States.

Shakespeare: Cymbeline, Act 1, Scene IV. What is the bet that is made in this scene? What are the “prizes?”

Math: Read the description of geometric models on page 46 of the textbook. In your notebook, write out a definition of a geometric model (what is it? What is it used for?) Get out four cubes (building blocks) and set them up as shown. Compare your cubes with the drawings of top view, side view, front view. Answer questions 5 & 6 on page 47.

Computer time

The Aeneid of Virgil. Read from page 31 to the end of page 32 and narrate what has happened to Andromache since Hector’s death and the fall of Troy. Read to the top of page 35, stop, and narrate the first part of Helenus’s instructions to Aeneas. (Who are Scylla and Charybdis?) Read the rest of his instructions, and the rest of pages 36 and 37.

Skills and crafts

Science: Read The Great Motion Mission, page 23-top of page 26. Narrate orally: what is going on at the art gallery? Read this out loud three times: “Visible light is radiation in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum.” Take the blue sidebar on page 26 to your father and ask him to explain it to you.

Science: 1. Read “Light Color Optics” by John Grunder, in The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, Winter 2008, pages 72-74. 2. Play the “Light Race” board game from the Eyewitness Action Pack “Light & Illusion.”

Canadian history: Read Story of Canada, pages 230-233

Folk songs

English: Write Source 2000, “Library Skills.” 1. Read the introduction and section 290. 2. Sections 291-293 show you how a "card catalogue" works. What are some reasons that most public and school libraries now use computerized catalogues instead of actual cards? Would there be any advantages to a card system? Disadvantages? 3. Review of the Dewey Decimal System.

Thursday:  Field trip morning!

Citizenship: Uncle Eric, chapter 3, “Sorting Data.” “Without good models, or paradigms, students have no way to know which facts are important and which are not.”

Math: Use the clinometer you made on Monday to measure one other object outside (p. 47, question 8). Also answer questions 9 (views of an object), 10 (matching pairs), and 12. Weekend homework: p. 49, question 16: construct an object using 8 cubes; draw the front, top, and side views of your object. Give 8 cubes and your drawings to someone else. Challenge him/her to construct an object using the drawings. Is the object the same as the object you created?

Dictation

Canadian history: Read Story of Canada, pages 234-235. Narrate.

Picture study: read about Emily Carr’s breakthrough in 1927. How did her meeting with the Group of Seven change her life as an artist? Compare Lawren Harris’s painting on page 32 (of Anne Newlands’ book) with Carr’s 1928 painting "Skidegate." Also compare "Skidegate" with her 1912 painting on page 25.
Poetry: read these poems from Florence McNeil’s Emily: “Home” (p. 36); “Discoveries II” (p. 41); “Discoveries III” (p. 44); “The Group of Seven” (p. 46).

Art Instruction: Choose something outdoors (maybe a tree?) to paint or draw in Emily Carr’s later style. Try and paint its “inside” more than its “outside.”
