New Treehouse Series: Education is a discipline

I think Charlotte Mason homeschoolers like to think about "Education is an Atmosphere" and "Education is a Life" better than we like to think about "Education is a Discipline." Even if we're not hung up on the Gentle and Lite incarnation of CM, we may still feel that there's been enough force, timetabling, and must-do's in education, without our having to add to them. Besides, we're homeschoolers. We cherish that little bit of freedom, and we don't like being told what to do and when to do it. By the government. By teachers' guides. Sometimes even by those who really do have something worthwhile to say about it.  We don't want to push our children, we worry that we're going to make them hate learning if we make them do things.  Where do "things and thoughts" go if we start dragging in "shoulds and musts?"

This month...or at least as long as it takes...I want to focus in on Charlotte Mason's ideas on the discipline and duty of education. Don't run away.
